Blach Construction Uses SketchUp Pro

This case study of buildings in SketchUp Pro is from California based construction firm, Blach Construction. They show you exactly how they use the software. They choose SketchUp because of its many tools that create quick 3D models which communicate much more clearly than 2D.  They also like SketchUp for its user friendliness which makes it easy to learn.  And the intuitive modeling tools they say allow their teams to easily create models and custom objects such as plumbing fixtures for use in other BIM programs. For more, check out this case study at:

Apparently Google Sketchup has a physics simulator called SketchyPhysics. Anyone try it out? I saw this hacked up robot sim yesterday . . .

The sim file can be found here:

Now with ever greater accuracy.

Incrementally greater accuracy.

Pass the SketchUp

Ever play with Google's SketchUp? It's not the most powerful 3D software for those of us who spend our lives in CAD, but it's a lot of fun for quick and easy stuff just because it's so quick and easy! Once in a while I play around with it. I built the exterior of my house just to see how it would look, and sometimes I have little ideas I just want to get out and don't want to dig out paper and pen to create a sketch that I'm just going to lose later on. For instance: I hate our stupid bed frame! I don't know how many times I've stubbed my toes on the darn caster/post at the corner of the frame. Our house doesn't have much in the way of storage either, so we store our shoes under the bed in bins. But that's a total pain because you have to reach for the bin, pull it out, pull the lid off, and find your shoes. Most of my shoes just find their way to the floor next to my side of the bed. So I made up my own little IKEA concept bed, with nothing in range of my toes when I'm standing next to the bed, and with easy, hidden storage for shoes underneath. One of the beautiful features of SketchUp is you can import other people's models. So once I had the bed frame and mattress drawn, I could just search "lamps" and "pillow" and rob a model that someone else already built. This is like a 10 minute composition, as quick as a pencil sketch, and in correct perspective on the first shot! Now I just need the time and a woodshop to build it.

This next concept is one I'd like to finish sometime. Corbin and I were playing with a set of dominos the other day, "making towers". I started cross stacking them and thought "hey, that would make a really cool apartment building!" So before I could forget about it, I made up the domino stack in SketchUp. Basic, but fun.

Sketch it before you Cut it

Google Sketchup 7

It's my lunch break and I just threw together a plan on Google Sketchup 7 for the desk that I'm going to build tonight. If you haven't ever used Google Sketchup then you should definitely check it out. It's a whole lot of fun and can be easily learned. I picked it up in about an hour (months ago) after going through all of the tutorials that came with it. The tutorials are especially easy because they're hands on. It shows you something and then they have you do it before you can go on to the next thing. It's pretty cool.

Another amazing thing they have is the 3D Warehouse. While in the program (as long as you have an Internet connection) you can import 3D models directly into your model. These models are free to download because they're built by people like me who waste their lunch period playing around with a computer program. Anyone can upload a model they built and so there is a huge amount of models just hanging out there. There are extravagant ones that are highly detailed like house plans, antique cars, and skyscrapers as well as simple ones like stick figures, soccer balls, and flowers.

It can really prove to be quite useful, actually, if you want to build something complex. I plan on doing it for the deck plans that I have drawn up already. My drawn plans are pretty accurate, but my 3D version will cover EVERYTHING. I'll be able to measure every board. My material list can be extremely accurate. With this program, I can even have it count the number of screws that I place in the model. How cool is that? It can also be useful with the simple things, too, like this desk, for instance. I didn't necessarily need to create a 3D model of this desk in order to build it, but I did need to figure out the design of it in my head and I do a lot better when I can actually see it come together BEFORE I start cutting boards. Once a board is cut, it's cut. I've learned this all too well over the years and kick myself every time I find I've cut something too short. So, this is a way that I can put something together and have it for sure be right. I like drafting plans for projects. I always have. But nothing beats being able to draft a 3-dimensional project in 3 dimensions.

Well, my lunch is over, so I gotta go. But, I uploaded two plans to the warehouse. My plans for the desk and the one I drew up months ago for the house. I included a material list for the desk so that maybe it will help someone out there looking for a quick, cheap desk they can build themselves.

Once again, this is a free program available for download for anyone to use. Click here to download the program. Click here to see my house plans on Google or here to see my desk plans on Google. Happy building!

SketchUp is Cool by Being Not Cool

SketchUp is Not for Kids

Kids love realistic cool models but Sketchup is serious about design. We have one wise customer who said I have completed my share of chrome logo karma for this life, thank you : )

We are looking for serious customers who want to use SketchUp as a design tool. It is fast and easy to use so time can be put into design instead of a cool look.

We are thankful to our customers who help us know what is not cool.

How is SketchUp used: Youtube and Google Earth

SketchUp Uses

The big thing right now is placing buildings in Google earth. A quick search and I found companies providing this service. I found some very interesting SketchUp Videos on youtube. I get the impression architecture students are enjoying this tool. Some put music to their video building tours. It makes me wonder if the days of building balsa wood buildings is over.

There are lots of other interesting uses. Some can be seen in 3D warehouses. I will try to spot the trend with this fantastic tool and see where google might be headed. I know they love to get users to contribute data and so far it looks like they are succeeding with SketchUp.

They are having a contest to see who can make their college campus the best in SketchUp. Google is very smart and very good and getting user generated content.
