CADSpan Releases a 3D Printing Plug-in for Google SketchUp

Google SketchUp is probably one of the few gizmos that are getting more popular on a daily basis. For those who aren’t aware of SketchUp, it’s a software that allows users to create 3D models, similar to the olden days of 3D Studio Max and Autocad.

Leader in 3D printing solutions, CADspan has introduced a new plugin for SketchUp that powers users to generate 3-D models from 2-D computer renderings.

Just as a .doc file represents a word document, .stl file is used by 3D applications for 3D printing. CADspan’s plugin allows users to easily convert non 3D printing files into .stl files.

Tasha Danko, the media rep for SketchUp wrote on Google blog - “Our friends at CADspan just released a plug-in that allows for the generation of solid, 3-D printable files directly from a Google SketchUp model,”

“This software re-creates a model by ’shrink-wrapping’ it with one continuous mesh. The result is a single object, in STL file format, that is completely solid and ready to print.”

With effortless conversions of renderings into 3D models, the concept and hence 3D printers have the gate pass to reach new heights. It will make 3D printers a-must-have gadget to the public eye. We believe that this is just the start, with more companies jumping in the fray, the open source market will be wide open for a plethora of developments.

Houston Neal writes "Synchro, makers of 4D (3D + time) construction simulation software, has developed a plug-in for Google SketchUp. The tool allows you to create 3D drawings in SketchUp and import them into the Synchro timeline. The result is a 4D simulation of a construction project as it progresses through time. 3D and 4D modeling software is an important addition to any architects’ or project managers’ IT toolbox. It helps them clearly communicate the construction process to clients and stakeholders, while providing visual insight into possible delays and miscalculations. Synchro recently demonstrated their plug-in at the CMAA conference in San Francisco. Software Advice, an online resource that helps construction companies find construction project management software, was there to capture the action. Synchro: Your model in 4D

Synchro is a 4D (3D + scheduling) application that allows you to create and see the construction schedule of your project -- all at the same time. They've created a plugin for SketchUp and have full support for the SKP file format. The plugin allows you to bring geometry from SketchUp into Synchro with a unique ID attached to each component. This gives users the ability to make changes in their SketchUp models and port those changes back to Synchro while iterating on designs. Creating a 3D printing file from a Google SketchUp file has never been easy. Today a new class of 3D printing technology has slashed the time and expense it takes to create a physical model. Our friends at CADspan just released a plugin that allows for the generation of solid, 3D printable files directly from a Google SketchUp model. This software re-creates a model by "shrink-wrapping" it with one continuous mesh. The result is a single object, in STL file format, that is completely solid and ready-to-print.

3D printers create a physical object from a digital model by first dividing it into thin virtual “slices.” Then, the printers build the physical model, one layer at a time. These machines can typically build a shoe box sized object with almost any detail, overnight.
