India has been much in the news in the US of late - be it the
front-page of president Bush playing cricket (not) or Jay Leno's take
on what Bush was thinking while Prime Minister Manmohan Singh gave a
speech.
The cover story for this month's Newsweek magazine (US Edition) is "The New India." Featuring actress Padma Lakshmi on the cover, the magazine devotes 12 pages to the India article which talks about "democratic India...growing fast, and now may partner up with the world's richest democracy - America." With predictable photographs of the Taj Mahal and a colorful two-pager on "Why India's Hot," the issue also features a one-page write-up by Pulitzer prize-winning writer, Jhumpa Lahiri.
What is making everyone sit up and take notice is the fact that India's economy is bursting at the seams and its not only call centers that deserve the credit. Outsourcing of various kinds - from IT to Content writing - is pulling in the moolah and helping the sprawl of the mall and ushering in a new wave of rich kids who grew up watching their parents struggle with trying to make ends meet. They are embracing a new lifestyle, a new outlook and with it, creating a new culture that remains traditional at the roots but expands its horizons well beyond the country's borders.
It is individuals with vision and small companies like Chillibreeze that are going to help usher in the new boom. With innovative business models like work-from-home and virtual offices, we are attracting the world's attention.
