There are retail stores at every street corner in town. Retail jobs have changed the employment landscape. Young boys and girls have been employed to assist customers.

But are they really able to help customers?

In most cases, the results are disappointing. The poor quality of shop floor assistants, rude behavior and total indifferent attitude will cost companies. Retail stores will see poor numbers unless they improve customer service and have informed manpower.

Concert Review: Disney Magic Show in Bangalore

Every parent in Bangalore wants to take the kids to watch the Disney Magic Show.

The show is a good idea (considering the limited entertainment options the city has) and planned fairly well (ignore the inadequate parking and traffic chaos after the shows)

The biggest disappointment was the acoustics of the indoor stadium where the event was held. You could hardly hear the dialogues and the music. Considering the price of the tickets, I think the show organizers needed to do a better job.

The trend seems to be to make a fast buck. If you charge, then deliver the quality.

The organisers should have planned the event in a school auditorium.

Trident Ghar Ka Khana - North Indian Food Mess

Those working in Koramangala would be aware of Ghar Ka Khana - most would have bought coupons by the month. For those that dont know about it - please ensure you have atleast one meal there, its simple, home cooked fare served up with care and interest. The quanities (unlimited) are staggering and you will have to watch your weight if you plan on becoming a regular.

But dont go expecting anything fancy - in true mess style, you will see makeshift chairs and tables, loud music from a radio and unlimited food. The first round is self service, but once you sit down, refills of phulkas, dal and the day's vegetables are served at the table - on and on, until you can take no more.

Look it up on the net - yes, they have a site, and mail out the day's menu to subscribers. If there is something you particularly want, suggest it and just maybe, the chef will rustle it up and add it to the menu.

System inefficiencies at retail stores and hospitals

The retail and healthcare boom is happening but inefficiencies are high due to poorly trained manpower.

You shop at a store in 10 minutes flat because you have your list ready and time is short but when you reach the billing counter it takes 10 minutes in the queue- because the team working there is slow and on the learning curve.

A similar experience at my visit to Columbia Asia hospital- the appointment with the doctor is scheduled before hand and the consultation is quick. When you want to buy the prescribed medicine at their drug store, you are waiting for 20 odd minutes or more. Similar is the wait at the billing counter.

One of the critical factors for success of medical tourism and retailing will be the quality and efficiency of manpower deployed for support services.

Manish Gupta says: “Lately been to Subhiksha Pharmacy? Although I knew that they offer 10% discount on medicines, I saved a cool Rs. 90 on purchase of Rs 900/- worth medicines. Even got a first aid kit free. Vaccines were provided in a cool pack, at no extra cost. I got really impressed by the way things are turning up in the retail sector... ultimately its once again to the old adage "CUSTOMER IS THE KING"....undoubtedly!!!!”

We also had Ashish Reddy who was not too happy with their home delivery service, which is a format that all retail majors are stumped with, much to the the local kirana or in this case, medical store’s delight.

Here is what Ashish says : “In Subhiksha shops the service is quite poor and unprofessional. The workers do not have good manners; they don't even have a proper pharmacist. They have no clue of what you need and cannot even communicate properly. When it comes to home delivery, it is the worst I have seen. I am in

Hyderabad

, and when I ordered some medicines they only brought 5 out of the 9 things I had ordered.”

He adds: “There is an online/call center based warehouse called MedEx (www.medex.in) and you call them at a certain number or place order online and you get the medicines on time and the FULL order. And the best part is Medex is 100% home delivery business - they have no store front at all. I heard they are doing well. The whole ISB MBA campus is ordering from there.”
